Our Homes For Good Program recently dedicated a new home with Claudia Maria Zelaya Lopez and her six children in Los Robles, Nicaragua. Her lifelong dream of owning a home was made possible by the generosity of Comunidad Connect donors, local masons, and her fellow neighbors.

At her home dedication ceremony, Claudia read a prepared note to those that gathered outside her front door. She thanked God, our donors, the Comunidad Connect staff, and everyone present for making her family’s new reality possible.

We are still reliving the magic of September’s Salsa on the Square fiesta! An estimated 4,000 people joined us to enjoy the sights, sounds, and flavors of the rich Latinx Community in the historic downtown Decatur Square. Special thanks to Placita Latina, a group of volunteers led by Susan Sparks, Maria Alvarez, and Jon Thompson. Big shout out to Josephine Figueroa of La Choloteca for managing the incredible vendors and Antonio Rodriguez & Lizbeth Cardenas of Danceando Promotions for transforming the square into a vibrant marketplace.
Comunidad Connect was a proud to sponsor this event alongside The City of Decatur, Decatur Business Association, The Carlos, Decatur Package Store, Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative (AWBI), Surf ATL, Atlanta Spine Center, Atlas Spine & Rehab, Pittman Consulting, Puente Desarrollo Internacional, Delta Vacations, and Mas Seguro Mas Salud. Placita Latina also put on an incredible Latinx Art Exhibition at the Decatur Visitor’s Center on October 13th. The last remaining event in October is a Day of the Dead Parade from the historic Decatur Cemetery to the downtown Decatur Square. Click below to visit the Placita Latina website and learn more.

Join Dr. Ben Thrower, M.D. (Shepherd Center Atlanta) and Dr. Amy Gutierrez M.D. (Orlando Health Neuroscience Institute) for a conversation about how advances in neurological science, medicine, and healthcare can benefit everyone through inclusive approaches to research. Dinner is included at this free event and a Zoom link will also be available for virtual viewing.

In late July, Westminster Presbyterian Church traveled to the Dominican Republic with Comunidad Connect and worked with a number of families throughout the week constructing bathrooms and improving household accessibility for families caring for patients living with special medical needs. See below for a photo diary of their experience. The photos were taken by Scott Neely.

Look who’s in the neighborhood! We were excited to see our new Comunidad Connect billboard go up at the Proyecto Montemar Jose Nuñez Sports Complex in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Our 17 years experience with youth sports guided us to the slogan, “Sports and Life”. We are thrilled to continue partnering with youth sports in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.
