Dr. Doug Gardenhire and his Georgia State University Respiratory Therapy Students recently joined us in the Dominican Republic for a rewarding week of service learning.

In partnership with our community partner, Puente Desarrollo Internacional, the students worked in two communities, assessing the pulmonary function of 50+ individuals. Puente will follow up accordingly with home visits and referrals in the coming months.

In addition to the home visits, the students began construction of two bathrooms for two families in the La Cuarenta community, which have now been finished.

During the same exciting week, Dr. Johnathan Steppe, Dr. Diane Keen, and their Nursing students from Kennesaw State University were also in-country.

The students conducted family health assessments, joined GSU students on the bathroom projects, visited clinical sites including the municipal hospital and community clinics, and met with community health workers in Constanza.

The data collected from the assessments will help Puente follow up accordingly and identify patients for future Comunidad Connect groups to work with.

Our team in Nicaragua recently distributed care packages to community leaders in Los Robles. We are grateful to these women for their leadership, perseverance, and advocacy for the most vulnerable families in their community year after year. In addition, Comunidad Connect field staff also delivered warm meals to elderly women in honor of International Women’s Day.

Female athletes in Nicaragua often find it difficult to find organized sports and community recreation spaces. This past month, we were proud to open the 2023 Comunidad Connect Women Softball League for 5 teams. The teams pay a small registration fee and throughout the season, we coordinate schedules, organize field usage with the local government, and conduct weekly meetings with the team leaders. However, the women’s league is in need of baseballs, bats, and helmets. Your small gift today can help this league run smoothly this year and for years to come. Consider supporting the Women’s Softball League today!
