On behalf of the Comunidad Connect family of community partners in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and the United States, we sincerely thank you for your support and collaboration in the 2023 Together For Wellness campaign. We raised over $100,000 to invest in programs that connect families with healthcare, health education, and activities that improve their well-being.  We build homes, visit patients, promote youth sports, and create jobs because people like you believe in us. You are part of a growing community of over 4,000 people dedicated to making the world better. Over the years, we have accomplished some amazing impact together:

  • 28 houses built (119 individuals benefiting)
  • 2,000+ volunteers (Nicaragua & DR)
  • 2,150 home visits for special needs patients
  • 22,000 health clinic consultations
  • 10,000 youth playing sports
  • 6,000 attendees at US events (2023)

We began 2023 with cautious optimism. Comunidad Connect (CC) Nicaragua was still open amidst an incredibly difficult political environment, a collapsed economy, and the largest exodus of Nicaraguans since the civil war in the 80’s. CC Dominican Republic was vying for traction with local partners, recruiting groups to travel, and searching for a home base of operations. All this while CC USA planned its biggest public splash to date with an ambitious slate of events. Expectations were high and we knew it was going to be a big lift for everyone involved.

Regardless, we did it! Our community of support showed up like never before. The CC team in Nicaragua stood firm in providing housing, health, and wellness programs while thousands of similar organizations remained shuddered. In the Dominican Republic, we formally registered Comunidad Connect as a non-profit, and Cultural Connections hosted a record number of groups. And back by popular demand, our annual global health summit debuted in the DR with great success. As we look to the future, we are excited and emboldened by your collaboration that has made this organization possible and we cannot thank you enough!

“Crafting strategies together to improve health outcomes for all”

In December, Comunidad Connect hosted its 5th Annual Global Health Summit in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Representatives from the universities of Georgia State, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kennesaw State joined colleagues from the Dominican Ministry of Public Health and healthcare practitioners as they gathered over several days to share research findings, seek synergies, and “craft strategies to improve health outcomes for all.”

There is a well-documented lack of licensed physical and occupational therapists in the DR while a growing population of stroke and motorcycle accident patients need more access to therapy. Distance, affordability, education, and linguistic barriers keep the most marginalized populations in a constant cycle of declining health. At the health summit, Comunidad Connect was urged to connect US academic partners with Dominican universities to help expand their licensure programs to the provinces of Puerto Plata and Santiago. Those contacts have been made and 2024 will be a year to nurture those relationships through site visits with our student and faculty groups visiting from GA State and Kennesaw State.

Following the Health Summit, our DR team hosted a group of Nursing students from Kennesaw State University. They spent the week learning about the Dominican healthcare system and conducting family assessments with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and their families. Yarisleidy Cortez was also there from Nicaragua, and she led several groups on community snapshot experiences that introduced them to local leaders who hosted them on walking site visits in neighborhoods Comunidad Connect hopes to work with in the future.
