In the heart of Los Robles, Nicaragua, in the Barranco Blanco sector, Gloria faced a daily struggle that many of us take for granted; the simple dignity of having a private bathroom. A young housewife with a six-year-old son, Gloria, and her family live in poverty, where financial resources are scarce. Every penny her husband earns goes toward food, leaving nothing for household improvements, let alone basic sanitation needs.

For years, Gloria and her family had no choice but to relieve themselves outdoors. When possible, they walked a long distance to a local shop to use the facilities. But at night, the journey became too dangerous. If nature called, they either waited until morning or risk using the deteriorating outdoor structure near their home, where privacy is non-existent and fear of being seen looms constantly.

The absence of a bathroom is more than an inconvenience; it is a threat to health, safety, and dignity for many families. Gloria worried not just for herself but for her child. The risk of being bitten by an animal, encountering dangerous individuals, or facing humiliation weighed heavily on her. No mother should have to live in fear over something as basic as using the restroom.

In 2023, Gloria became a beneficiary of the Homes For Good project, an initiative dedicated to providing families with dignified housing. And in 2025, they received their safe sanitation system through the Baños for Good project. For Gloria, having a private bathroom isn’t just about comfort, it’s about protecting her child, ensuring her safety, and reclaiming her dignity.

Every family deserves a space where they can meet their most basic needs without fear or shame. Through projects like Homes For Good and Baños For Good, we can help make that a reality.
