Doug Gardenhire from GA State University also presented at the 2020 Comunidad Connect Health Summit. He shared findings from his research on respiratory health in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Over the last couple of years. He and his students conducted home visits to measure Pulse Oximetry, Carbon Monoxide Levels, Vitals (Heart Rate, Respiratory Rate, BP), and Breath Sounds in rural and semi-urban communities. GSU student groups conducted health assessments 2019 and 2020 with 62 community participants from the Dominican Republic and 76 participants from Nicaragua.

Overall, older ages were associated with increased levels of carbon monoxide in both countries. Consequently, we have began to prioritize clean cook stoves and oven for senior citizens. For more detailed information on the research, write to info@comundiadconnect.org
